About the dog and artist
Meet Carmela, the Basset, created by local artist Boo Simms. Her name, meaning "garden," is a heartfelt ode to the whimsical charm and enchanting beauty of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Inspired by the coastal wildlife, fairytale cottages, and vibrant gardens that weave through our town, Carmela was inspired by the magic that surrounds us. Her saddle-style blanket, adorned with delicate scalloped details, blue ribbons, and a collection of coastal wildflowers, reflects the varieties my daughters and I discover on our walks through town.
Her design embodies the essence of vintage quilts and wallpapers, blending basset brown spots with a textile-style pattern that merges the ‘cottagecore’ aesthetic with a style that feels rather playful and precious. A motif showcasing native floral varieties like California poppies, Blue-eyed Grass, Violets, Johnny Jump-Ups, Seaside Daisies, Wild Strawberries, and Nasturtiums dance across her form, woven with a pattern of whimsical blue ribbons tied in bows. Through a palette of soft pastels and pops of vintage-inspired hues, Carmela reflects the serene, nostalgic ambiance of our darling town. My hope is that Carmela not only celebrates and honors the unique charm and quiet elegance of Carmel-by-the-Sea but also evokes a sense of childlike wonder, magic, and joy in all who meet her.
